Why do we need a change in animal welfare?
Unimaginable suffering is still part of everyday life for countless animals in Germany: in factory farming, animal testing, the illegal animal trade, as stray cats or torture breeding and in many other situations. And this despite the fact that the German state is obliged to protect animals under Article 20a of the Basic Law. Animal welfare has been a national objective for 20 years. Hardly anything has happened since then. Politicians must finally take action. We need a change in animal protection - now!

How you can help
You can help the animals: by giving them your vote. If you vote for parties or people who also care about animal welfare, you increase the chance of finally improving the lives of animals in Germany. And that's not all: many animal welfare measures also protect the environment and the climate. For better orientation, we provide you with an animal welfare check of the election programs here.

What the German Animal Welfare Federation does
The German Animal Welfare Federation is committed to a better life for all animals in Germany and Europe. In doing so, we are involved on a professional, political and communicative level. We have a capital city office in Berlin and an office in Brussels for intensive lobbying around the Bundestag.
There, we take part in events and discussions and exchange ideas with politicians. We are committed to ensuring that animal welfare is fully taken into account in relevant parliamentary initiatives and that important animal welfare issues are continuously debated in the parliamentary groups and at plenary sessions. To this end, we formulate specific demands in a wide range of areas. You can read about these below.
Das muss sich für die Tiere ändern Our demands
Animals in Germany must finally be better off. Among other things, we are calling for this:
- animal welfare to finally be given the appropriate political status as a national objective
- all laws and regulations relating to animals to be reviewed for compatibility with the state objective of animal welfare in Article 20a of the Basic Law
- to introduce collective action for recognized animal welfare associations at federal level
- provide better financial support for animal shelters and value voluntary work
- to better protect animals in agriculture
- introduce a pet protection ordinance including mandatory castration for outdoor cats and mandatory identification and registration
- Combat the illegal puppy trade
- replace animal testing with animal-free methods
