The German Animal Welfare Federation supports the current demands of veterinarians for an immediate end to tethered cattle farming. Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Association, says:
"Tethered farming is a clear violation of animal welfare law. When cattle are tethered with chains or rigid neck frames, they cannot turn around, lick their backs when they itch, and certainly cannot run around or engage in social behavior. This practice violates the basic needs of the animals. Often, the space available is so limited that not all animals can lie down at the same time without hindering or injuring each other.
The tethering of cattle, which is contrary to animal welfare, must be consistently ended for all animals – both year-round and seasonal tethering."
