Before the start of the summer holidays, the German Animal Welfare Federation points out that pet owners should consider the welfare of their animal companions when planning their vacations. Anyone taking their dog on vacation must make some arrangements in advance and book accommodation where animals are welcome. For air travel, where pets should not be taken, suitable care arrangements must be made. Cats, pet birds, and small pets are best cared for at home.
"Those traveling by car can usually take their dog with them, provided the hotel or vacation rental allows pets. However, depending on the destination—for example, long-distance travel by plane or to countries with hot temperatures—it is better for dogs to stay with a suitable caregiver. Cats are sedentary and prefer to stay in their familiar surroundings. Small pets and ornamental birds are very susceptible to stress and should therefore also be cared for at home in their familiar surroundings and accommodation," emphasizes Dr. Romy Zeller, specialist advisor for pets at the German Animal Welfare Federation.
REQUIREMENTS FOR TAKING A PET WITH YOU
Before traveling, you should find out in detail about the entry requirements of your holiday destination. An EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination are mandatory when traveling abroad with a dog or cat. To cross the border, the animal must also be identified with a microchip transponder. It is advisable to register the microchip number with FINDEFIX, the pet register of the German Animal Welfare Federation. If the animal runs away while on vacation and is found, it can be quickly returned to its owner.
Depending on the country you are traveling to, there may be additional requirements for entering the country or bringing an animal with you; additional vaccinations may also be advisable. You should find out whether there is an increased risk of transmission of so-called travel diseases – infectious diseases that are rare or non-existent in Germany. It is therefore important to contact your vet in good time, who will also advise you on the necessary travel prophylaxis.
FINDING SUITABLE HOLIDAY CARE
If you are traveling without your pet, you should arrange suitable care well in advance, as pet boarding facilities and pet sitters are in high demand during the holiday season. "Ideally, you should consider how to organize vacations with or without your pet before you even get one. Whether a family member, neighbor, or friend, the ideal pet sitter is a reliable person you trust who knows the animal and its needs," says Zeller. The German Animal Welfare Federation has compiled a checklist on its website of what pet owners should look for in a pet boarding facility.
