On June 11, the German Animal Welfare Association is inviting companies to welcome dogs into the workplace as part of the “Colleague Dog” campaign day. Through this initiative, the association, in partnership with the pet food brand Cesar, aims to promote greater acceptance of dogs in the workplace. After all, when four-legged friends are allowed to accompany their humans to work, both sides benefit: Dogs spend less time alone, and employees often experience a more relaxed and communicative work environment.
“For many dogs, their owners’ workday means hours of being alone or in the care of others. Yet they depend on social contact and the closeness of their humans,” says Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Association. “When dogs are welcome in the workplace, it improves the quality of life for both humans and animals alike. At the same time, dog-friendly companies promote a modern work culture. They also create better conditions for shelter dogs to find new homes, as dog ownership and professional life become more compatible.”
PRACTICAL SUPPORT AND AWARDS FOR EMPLOYERS
To ensure the campaign day is a success for both people and animals, participating companies will receive comprehensive information and practical guidance for everyday office life with dogs after registering at www.kollege-hund.de. The Cesar pet food brand is providing a surprise package for the four-legged participants. All participating companies will also receive a certificate afterward recognizing them as dog-friendly employers. Businesses that permanently welcome dogs in the workplace can use a “Dogs Welcome” logo for their public branding.
DOGS NEED A SUITABLE RETREAT
Employees or companies that decide to participate with their dogs on the event day should obtain their employer’s consent in advance and clarify any allergies or fears among the staff. Each participant will receive a guide in advance on integrating dogs into the daily office routine. To ensure a relaxed workday, the dog should have a quiet retreat at the workplace with a blanket or dog bed, as well as access to fresh water at all times. Sufficient exercise and activity before work begins, as well as joint walks during breaks, also help ensure that the canine colleague feels comfortable.
